We had a fantastic discussion of the Church & State During the Civil War. Graciously Hosted by Court Patton and family.

Dr. Marcus MacArthur from Westminster Seminary CA provided the presentation, and facilitated the accompanying Q&A session. As usual, the fine build-your-own sandwiches and Mike Hess’s famed brews worked out great.

Dr. McArthur discussed the wartime experience of Missouri ministers who attempted to remain neutral during the American Civil War. Federal officials often interpreted ministers’ appeals to the spirituality of the church as evidence of disloyalty to the Union. As a result, many clergymen in Missouri faced removal from their pulpits, fines, arrest, imprisonment, and even banishment. The presentation will touch on issues of church and state during the Civil War, slavery and racial fears, Lincoln’s attitude toward neutral ministers, and the limits of religious liberty during a civil war.

Dr. McArthur is Vice President for Administration and Adjunct Professor of Church History at Westminster Seminary California. He received his Ph.D. in History from Saint Louis University in 2012. He is currently revising his dissertation on this topic for publication with a university press.

H&S Eastern Orthodox and Reformed Discussion Night

Posted on Updated on

Saturday, the 24th of October was a fairly significant date. It’s been over a year since our last event. We managed to pull off a fantastic meet with near-debate conditions with our friends from the Eastern Orthodox church in El Cajon. HNS24OCT15A very hearty Thanks goes out to Padre Simeon and his folk for the wonderful welcome, excellent venue and great conversation. Pastor Ben and Padre Simeon gave us plenty of thinking material. As always, Mike Hess Brewing provided the finest of drinks.
